This is probably the worst time to write any sort of update on my life, as I have a paper to write and two manuscripts to revise before I pack my bags and leave for UPLB. Don't judge me, this weekend and its surprise extension will be spent debating as if there were no mountain of work waiting in Metro Manila. Yes, I fully expect to graduate in April with all work contracts intact.
The only reason I have this time to type away is that in another tab, I'm uploading pictures of my sister's birthday party. We're supposed to be out having dinner now, but the rain + my pretentious brother's academic diligence kept us from going anywhere after hearing mass.
Whatever.
Some things that have happened recently, and some thoughts on my mind:
1. I had an awesome summer. I'm not sure if I've mentioned that. It started half a year ago and ended when it had to, but let it be said officially--it was awesome.
2. I'm doing my thesis this semester with Nikko. We're running a bit late with our first draft, but I'm generally pleased with our progress.
3. Speaking of thesis, now that I'm thirty units away from getting a degree in economics, I realize that I don't really know what the fuck I was thinking when I shifted here. Like, seriously.
4. I am not applying to The Law School. Not this year, anyway. Or maybe not ever.
5. I started teaching a real class this year. Real = Pays for more than my cab fare and requires a bit more than giving a debate seminar. Make that a whole lot more. It's actually been a pretty good experience. I like my students and I think they like me too. But it's disturbing how...different...they are from us when we were their age. I think my class of seniors is fairly hetergenous in composition, so as far as class performance is concerned, keri lang, it balances out. What's really unsettling is the horror stories from the lower batches. Thank God I'm handling very few of them for my other class.
6. The other class is the debate class, and while I miss my old students, I think I'm going to be better at handling it this year. Feeling ko lang. Also, we've reconvened the debate training pool and what I've seen so far is promising. More than the abundance of raw skill (as in howmaygahd, there are girls left who actually think!), I'm pleased with how excited most of them are about training and competing.
7. When my mother was my age, she had just gotten married. What. The. Fuck. No wonder she needed therapy and cocaine-like powder for heart palpitations. By the way, I had a great 21st birthday. I had a party and a post-party and stuff.
8. Money is finite. If it weren't, we'd be in a constant state of inflation. Whatever. But the point is, it runs out.
9. I've done seven leadership and journalism trainings this year. I love my team forever.
10. I know that if at the end of an academic day, I feel incredibly inadequate and mediocre, it's only because I'm getting the best university education this country has to offer--and really, its whole point is to challenge me. So I shouldn't really feel bad if there are days when I feel incredibly inadequate and mediocre. But I do. And it sucks, like, a lot. Parang hello, gets ko naman na I'm not like a super hot, talented, genius kid but I just feel so bobo sometimes.
11. I'm driving now, but we said byebye to the Altis and I'm not allowed to drive the giant Starex, so I'm not driving anything right now. My dad managed to convince me that I am the worst driver he has ever seen, but I knew he was exaggerating when I realized that half the people on the road are dumber than me. Like, for real, who taught these people?
12. My sister is amazing but incredibly sexist. Her school is so freaking traditional, they've brainwashed her into believing that boys can't play with stoves. Which, of course, I firmly disagree with.
13. It's been so hard to get back on form, debate-wise. Like you know how they say you need a couple of debates to shake the rust off? I needed a couple of months. But I'm hoping the training will pay off in the next three days.
14. There is no boy in the horizon. There was one for a moment, and then the curse kicked in again. Thanks talaga, universe. They're all either gay, taken, or both. FML much.
15. Forget the non-boys and the taken boys, my friends are awesome. Including the non-boys.
There. I thought of breaking this post up into coherent sections, but I'm too lazy. What's new, right. At least we're updated.

| Aftermath of the Wallet Incident (aka Kat's Bobo Moment) |
[02 Feb 2009|11:12pm] |
Three years ago, my wallet got stolen. It was a rip-off Ferragamo with twenty pesos inside. I kid not. I felt bad for the guy/girl who stole it. I was so broke, I just had enough for the bus ride home. I ended up having to borrow money from Thea so as not to like, walk home.
Today, my wallet got stolen again. It was a very nice not-Roxy-looking Roxy wallet (because I don't think the usual colorful Roxy wallets suit me) that Michelle gave me for my birthday last year. I liked it a lot because it was black, it was leather and it looked kind of formal. Like the Girbaud wallet it replaced. But now it's gone, and the Girbaud wallet is stained and old. I'll be using a pink one starting tomorrow. I judge myself.
With the black wallet went an amount of cash that was substantially larger than twenty pesos. I spent the morning feeling crummy about that. And I had to make ten million calls to block out my ATM accounts. No one, and I mean no one, will probably ever guess my PIN codes, pero I had to be sure. Plus, I had to report the loss so I could get new ATM cards. In this department, winner ang BPI sa efficiency. Wagi talaga. Patalo ang PNB.
And then I had to go to the police station and have the whole thing put on their blotter. I didn't intend to do this part anymore because I was in a hurry and all, plus, wala lang, di ko lang feel makipag-usap sa pulis even if it's really our civic duty to report crimes; ended up doing it anyway upon being told that my driver's license might get misused and I might end up getting a record for homicide or something that I didn't commit. Wait lang, this is my second trip to a precinct na---this semester. Oh no.
And yeah, this week--if I have the time, and that's a big if--I have to get a new license, get affidavits of loss notarized, pick up my new ATM cards and get a new cedula. I think? Or is it illegal, like with the TIN, to have two CTC numbers? Meh. There's really no rush to get everything done, but I think the sooner I've put together a new, complete wallet, the sooner I'd get over this feeling of shet-nanakawan-ako. It's not a very pleasant feeling.
It was much easier when my wallet just had twenty pesos.

| January 6 won't come soon enough |
[11 Dec 2008|01:22am] |
OK, so after this evening's epic mishap involving my first ever trip to a police precinct (pictures and blog entry to follow), I turned on my computer for some Gossip Girl stress relief.
( Let's not spoil it. )

| The Week of Watching |
[04 Dec 2008|09:20pm] |
I don't have Econ 109 (History of Economic Thought) tomorrow because Dean De Dios has a meeting, which means I don't have to read Adam Smith tonight. So I get to write about last week's viewing pleasures. Yay.
Hairspray
When I say "last week", let me include Saturday before last, when I watched Atlantis Productions' version of Hairspray with Burn and Camille. We missed Good Morning Baltimore because we, apparently, have a combined spatial intelligence quotient of -14, ergo hindi namin nahanap in time ang Star Theater in CCP.
It was my first time to see Hairspray; I didn't see the Hollywood version until I chanced upon some scenes in HBO just a while ago. Generally, it was entertaining enough, although it was hard to appreciate the 60s American humor. Like, someone would make an allusion to some other person or some event and everyone else would laugh, and I would laugh because it seems funny, but then again I wouldn't really get it. Kat fails in the history of American pop culture.
And then there was the bright, shiny, diabetes-inducing production design. Everything was either so pink or so neon or so blindingly bright. The set, the costumes, the actors' hair. And because I was with Burn and Camille, of course we had to get the seats that were really near the stage. Normally that would be fine. This time, medyo masakit sa mata.
CA played Amber, and to be fair, bagay. I liked her better than the Hollywood Amber. She's lost a lot of weight, probably because of dancing so much in rehearsals. I saw her pass by in AS the day before we watched the show and she was so thin I felt like a balyena, k. But speaking of dancing, Nyoy Volante as Seaweed Stubbs wins! I knew that he can, like, sing, pero I never knew that he had the moves. Wagi talaga. Favorite namin siya tsaka yung girl who played Penny.
I also liked You Can't Stop the Beat better onstage than in the movie. There's something about ensemble dance finales; they're really better live.
Twilight
OK, I dunno why this falls under "viewing pleasures", so I'm going to assume it was because Rach and I watched the premiere last Tuesday for free. Haha. As with Hairspray, the pre-show experience involved a remarkable failure of spatial intelligence. How to get to AFP Theater? Enter Gate 1 of Camp Aguinaldo, friends. Gate 1. Hindi Gate 4. And enter the pedestrian gate if you're walking, k? Not the one just for cars.
It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. It was interesting in a made-for-TV movie kind of way. You know, like, I discouraged my parents from watching it last weekend because that would involve actually shelling out money to see...Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson staring at each other. But because I'd seen it without spending (thanks to the good graces of my alma mater's student council), I didn't feel too bad about it, even if the plot could have easily fit in an episode of Charmed. Plus, I got to catch up with Rach, so funfun. (And yes, we spent the night judging people. Some more than others.)
I did get annoyed over the screaming girls, though. I never read the books, so I really had no idea as to what the story was. I thought I'd figure it out as the movie went along, but no. Whenever Robert would come out, or whenever some weird, cheesy high school thing would happen, the dialogue would be drowned out by shrill, obviously boy-thirsty screams. At some point, sabi ko na lang kay Mia Onglao and Rach, "Dare, sabihin mo 'Seniors, silence please.'"
Kristen Stewart is <33333. That's her in my userpic for this entry (scene from In the Land of Women). Loved her in Speak, the indie film that launched her.
Ploning
Eto na ang tunay na winner. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS MOVIE. I have never felt so strongly about any Filipino movie, like, ever (Mula sa Puso: The Movie included; oo, telenovela kid ako dati). And for bonus points, because it was shown in the UP Film Center, my sense of direction was not challenged heading for it. I watched it with Nikko (who wanted so badly to see Juday in person, but didn't) last Wednesday, and it so made up for the fluff that was Twilight.
And I sooo want it to get nominated for Best Foreign Film in next year's Academy Awards. Unfortunately, kalaban niya ang Love of Siam, so kalaban yata namin ni Juday ang lahat ng bading sa mundo. (Syempre sa Love of Siam ako natakot at hindi sa, say, Cannes Winner, The Class.) Someone hire this movie a publicist. Like now na, so it generates the buzz it needs for an Oscar nomination.
I first heard about this movie when I attended a lecture-forum thing last year featuring Aureus Solito, the guy who made Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros and Pisay. He said that one of his dream projects is a movie set in Palawan, but that when he heard about Dante Garcia working on Ploning, he was excited about it himself. Ploning is set in Cuyo, just a bit off Palawan's main island. I waited for its commercial run, but for some reason, missed it. My mom and I kept planning to watch it, until one day the run was over and that was it. Yay for the Film Center.
You have to watch it. Nothing I say would be enough to explain how amazing it was. Beautiful story. Beautiful cinematography. Fantastic actors. Friend, Mylene Dizon and Gina Pareno in one movie, k? Dalawang Cinemalaya Best Actresses. And, well, si Juday. To be fair, OK siya. Hindi nga lang siya as stellar as some might think, pero mahirap naman kasi talaga magshine with such an amazing ensemble.
And if you're like Ella who hearts Ryan Agoncillo and therefore hates Juday, watch it pa ren kasi there are shots shown during credits that are all behind-the-scenes photos taken by Ryan. :)
Atang
To cap off the Week of Watching, I watched Dulaang UP's Atang: Dulang May Musika with Claire, RV, and Ate Jowee. It's basically a musical about the life of National Artist Atang Dela Rama. Siya daw ang tinaguriang Reyna ng Zarzuela, and I think that makes you the Britney Spears of Pinoys in the 1920s/30s, except that you actually have, um, talent.
Trivia: Atang is the wife of Amado V. Hernandez.
Claire: Sino si Amado Hernandez? Kat: Siya yata yung sumulat ng Luha ng Buwaya. Claire: Eh? Kat wins in Filipino Literature. Riiight.
It was OK; definitely better than some other DUP plays I've seen. And I'd have to commend it for being entertaining enough despite being mostly serious and featuring lots and lotsa people in ternos and barongs. Winner si Bituin Escalante, who gave a whole new meaning to "there are no small roles, just small actors." She had one scene, k? Literally one scene. Ayen Munji-Laurel, who played a young Atang, had maybe 10 songs, and she was fine in all of them. Bituin had ONE. And she was fantastic.
Let me end with the thought that stuck with me after the play, thanks to the love story between Atang Dela Rama and Amado V. Hernandez (who btw was an activist and one-time-big-time political prisoner--and yes, siya ang sumulat ng Isang Dipang Langit).
Ang hirap naman magmahal kung ang kaagaw mo sa mahal mo ay si...Inang Bayan. Mahirap nga, friend. Pero mas mahirap pa rin kung ang kaagaw mo sa lalaking mahal mo ay...lalaki rin.
Bow.

[27 Oct 2008|03:53pm] |
This is really just a shout-out to the world--I'm home, and regardless of the work I have to catch up with, I have a week to feel the semester break before going back to school. There are A LOT of stories from Davao, and I'll probably write all about them later or tomorrow.
For now, let me just say that this year's NDC made me both lose and regain faith in two things: debate (thanks to what Claire would call "strange adjudication") and boys (thanks to--never mind).
Pictures to follow as well.

| The Pre-Sembreak Post |
[14 Oct 2008|10:15pm] |
It really stings to go online and read about people who are enjoying the break already.
If there's really such a thing as spreading yourself too thin, these past two weeks have made me feel like watery mayonnaise. I have a million things to do before I leave on Sunday, but I've mostly been catching up on sleep the last three days--ergo, close to zero productivity. Sorry, last week killed me so I'm taking my time recovering before I get on with my *gasp* manuscript revisions for my CW 140 class. And, yes, I'm perfectly fine with the thought of cramming for my Econ 131 finals. What's new with reading nine chapters in Starbucks Katipunan three hours before an exam? Nothing. And that feeling of epic failure that greets me every time after a major test? Nothing still.
There are four sticky notes on my study table, labelled: ACADS, GIFT, DEBSOC and OTHERS. All in all there are fifteen (so, fine, it's not a million--but still) tasks scribbled on them, each accompanied by little empty boxes to indicate my lack of progress. One little box has been filled with pink ink, YAY ("Print booking receipt"). I swear, I'm going to color all those boxes pink, fly to Davao, punch through seven rounds of debate, and then I WILL PARTY THE SEMESTER AWAY. And after that, it's Diliman for the win. [And then I'll come home and meet the million new tasks that wait. But let's not be cynical. I should be fine by then after a douse (or two) of alcohol and a night (or two) of dancing with some of my best girls, boys and fags.]

[29 Jul 2008|06:52pm] |
GUYS, LET'S WATCH ENDO ON SATURDAY. UP Film Institute August 2, 2008 2/5/7pm Stupid me, I managed to miss its commercial run. Yay for Cinemalaya in UP Diliman. :) Mia, Burn, Camille, etc~~nakaka-miss Dramatics minsan, di ba? Look, it's Ina Feleo.

| Long time coming |
[06 Jul 2008|09:00pm] |
Well what do you know.
The last time I watched a UP-NU tiff, I snickered (in agreement) when a UP Pep member said it was like watching an inter-barangay tournament.
Kino texted me after the game, "Kat! I super missed this feeling." And then I felt bad I didn't watch, even in the tube. The stress of the last few weeks has kept me so preoccupied I haven't even watched a single PF game (and it's made me drop eight pounds, as well). But, hey, there's thirteen games to go and the secondary venue is Philsports Arena aka ULTRA. I can't wait to hear the drums that made me feel so giddy and high and proud before banging in my ears again.
I'm just glad we can officially say as early as now that we beat last year's record.
UP FIGHT!
PS I still miss Coach Joe.

| Avenue Q |
[13 Jun 2008|01:04pm] |
And you never know 'til you reach the top if it was worth the uphill climb. ***
Now my mom wants to watch with my dad, which is so unfair because they didn't give me money for my ticket.
I watched it last night with Miya and Eris, very spur-of-the-moment. Nash was supposed to watch with them, but something came up so they had an extra ticket. And I went, well, wth, I've been waiting since high school.
It was a good thing I did. Aside from the obvious hello-it's-Avenue-Q factor, it was nice to see Miya and Eris again, in their corporate attire no less. Well, Eris had her Chucks on, but the rest of her outfit was very JG Summit. Yes, that's where she works now. Miya, on the other hand, has been going to interviews and answering exams very competitively. :))
Here's to graduating on time, jobs and job interviews, graduate studies and moving out by the time I'm twenty-two.

| Said I wouldn't, said I didn't |
[22 May 2008|12:44am] |
I always kept saying that I don't like David Cook, that I just happened to love his version of Always Be My Baby.
But maybe I'm wrong. Because before Ryan Seacrest told us which David had won, I was very, very, very concerned that it wouldn't be him. When he was shaking his microphone, obviously agitated, I wanted to huuuuug him. :| I was really scared he wouldn't win. Haha. So much for not liking David Cook.
But but but, amazingly, that wasn't the highlight of the finale for me. I love Robert Downey, Jr. As in, I love him. I'll buy drugs for him. I love him.
Actually, I think he and David Cook have a lot in common aside from the facial hair (hee). They both have moments when they seem so full of themselves. Ha. I think...I'm a sucker for that type.
***
In other news, my final manuscript is due tomorrow and I am going nowhere with revisions. This is a little problematic since I promised Mariel I'll have lunch with her and her boyfriend tomorrow. And then, of course, there's my meeting for Pre-Australs later. I'll probably have to go to Starbucks before the meeting to get some writing done.
It's so hard to write at home. It's so hard to write after yesterday. It's so hard to write in general.
I said I wouldn't whine about this, but, well.

[18 May 2008|09:27am] |
So my orange phone decided to crash again about two weeks ago. Goodbye, phonebook. For the nth time. Geeez.
Please text me your number. Please? Everyone. I only have the numbers I memorized, the ones stored in my SIM card (very, very, very few), and those of people who've been texting me.
Yes, I'm currently using a model that's been around since I was in grade school. First generation Nokia rocks my socks off.
Special mention: SPCP 08, I need your numbers! I lost them all, except Mia's. :( See you on Wednesday, 3pm. Wear your party dresses.

| Tuesday night means Gossip Girl night! |
[13 May 2008|08:46am] |
Never mind that the stream went crazy and kept me from seeing about 7 minutes of the show. I had a really horrid day today, in and out of school, and I wanted kill people sooo bad, I thought I was going to cry from resisting the urge. But because it's Tuesday, I got to watch Gossip Girl's Episode 17, so I'm a happy girl.
3 things I love about this episode:
1. Blair's headbands. WAHHHHH I WANT. Last night, Pach and I were in Tiende looking for headbands. I bought four. But I also saw a REALLY REALLY PRETTY tiara-ish one, and I was like this close to getting the money from my bag and paying for it but Pach was like, "No, it's not worth it." It was a little expensive for a headband. There were also a bunch of pearl-studded headbands but they were kind of poorly made so awkward itsura sa buhok. Grr I want pearl -studded headbands like Blair's! I also liked the second one she wore for the rehearsal dinner. Pretty! PACH, LET'S FIND MORE HEADBANDS!
2. Rufus+Lily=<3! Makes you want to be forty with a lot of baggage and not a lot of closure. Sort of.
3. Lisa Loeb singing Stay. Love it! Winner din yung "has-been" role niya. I adore her. At first I thought she would really be acting when I saw her name in the opening credits, like the way she did for some movies way back when. Good thing she played herself 'coz she got to sing only one of my most favorite songs of all time. :)
***
In other news, I love my CW 110 class to bits. Swear! We're having our last meeting on Thursday in Chocolate Kiss. Awww, i know right? As my classmate Kim said, "I never thought workshop would be this fun."

| Vampires for My Birthday! |
[07 May 2008|07:25am] |
|
I never really got a hang of the whole vampire thing--I watched Interview with the Vampire only and only because of Kirsten Dunst. I never read the Anne Rice books. I tried, I failed. Sorry Nay Calay! So from the day I first heard of Twilight and the other books (which was around October last year) until, well, today, I never really had any interest in them. Pero surprise, Kristen Stewart is in the movie pala. I'm soooooo joining the bandwagon soon! Good thing the movie's due at the end of the year pa, so I have time to read beforehand. (I generally prefer reading books before watching their film versions. The obvious exception is Lord of the Rings. Haha.) Ahem, ahem, I'm turning twenty in June. Care to get me the book/s? :)

| GG Episode 16 and CW 110 |
[06 May 2008|02:29pm] |
|
Gossip Girl's Episode 16 is a winner in my book! I never knew that Michelle Trachtenberg could be so devilishly pretty in black eyeliner when I watched her in that movie with Rosie O'Donnell back when she was like, what, ten? Buffy the Vampire Slayer was sooo the transitional phase for her. :)) Blaire/Leighton Meesler was gorgeous, or at least more so than usual. Special mention: scene with Lily in the wedding dress. </3 Can't wait for next week. *** Interestingly, it was Gossip Girl that kept me going with my CW 110 story draft. My workshop date is on Thursday, so I had to finish it today in order to have copies ready for the class tomorrow (class policy, we always have to read ahead of time). I cannot even begin to explain how great it felt to print my first draft! It's just a first draft, but it's my story and I finished it. I actually finished it. It's not going to the For Future Use folder. It's actually complete. :) Love it! Yesterday I thought that by this time, I'd still be punching away at it, but I was done before midnight! Heck, I was done before eleven. I didn't have to wait another day to watch Gossip Girl! Haha. I was right that all I needed was a change of venue. The desk in the picture is actually my brother's, ergo the ugly blue walls. But in fairness, the ugly blue somehow facilitated my writing. :)) Though going back, my story still needs a lot of work, so I'm looking forward to workshop. Who knows, if I still like it eleven months from now, maybe I'll enter it in next year's Palanca's. :)) (Forgive my rare attack of optimistic high--this is how good I feel over finishing a full-length story. It's probably crap but I feel like I can do anything. It's liberating, I tell you, on so many levels.) I love this/last night. Except for the fact that I have to wake up at 6 later so I can accompany my brother to Melchor Hall. Yep, it's freshman reg week and it's his turn today. I'll try to get him to sit-in in Ma'am Billedo's class. Did I mention that I love her class? *** Those of you who know my mom might be interested to know that she just had some sort of procedure yesterday to get rid of stones in her bladder (or wherever it is that you get stones--sorry, sabi nga ni Ninang Cay, not paying attention ako). This is my mom, guys. She doesn't season our food and she tells me it's wrong to dip fries in catsup. And she had stones. For that, I'll die before I turn forty. *** Last na~~I just happen to be really on a high right now, hence the rambling on. Please tune in to ANC tonight, Wednesday, at 8 PM. Finals of Square Off: The AUDC, UP-Diliman vs Ateneo de Manila. The UP-Diliman team is composed of Anna Arcellana (super thanks!), Jowee Atienza and Aaron Chan. If I'm not mistaken, the Ateneo de Manila team is composed of Miko Biscocho, Gica Mangahas and Steph Co. I wanted to watch live, but I realized I had a lot of things to do for Thursday so I'll be watching from the telly. :) And, yihee, Sir Fabella will be watching daw. Econ is <3.
